The American Red Cross meets the immediate needs of disaster victims. They refer for first aid and CPR classes and shelter operations.

CASA El Dorado South Lake Tahoe

CASA trains volunteers and then matches them with children that have been made part of the dependency court because of abuse or neglect, or juveniles that are in the court system. The CASA volunteer is appointed, by the court, to the cases dealing with children. Each volunteer completes 30 hours of training before becoming a CASA.

El Dorado County Housing Authority
Section 8 Rental Assistance

Choice Voucher Program – enables eligible persons to rent privately owned, existing safe and sanitary housing by making housing assistance payments to private landlords. Applicants must first be placed on a waiting list when open. Family Unification Program is a component of the Section 8 Housing Assistance Program.

Eligibility Criteria: Federal income guidelines apply. Referral must come to the Unification Program from a child welfare agency.

Target Population: Low-Income individuals and families.


Emergency Shelter Assistance

Cold Weather Program (EHAP) – Cold weather shelter during winter months only as long as funds are available to provide homeless individuals/families with up to five days motel stay. State income guidelines apply.

Eligibility Criteria: Must verify homelessness and income.

Target Population: Homeless

Home Energy Assistance Programs

Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), California Alternate Rates for Energy (CARE), Sierra Pacific Crisis Program (SAFE), Avista Utilities crisis program (SHARE), South Tahoe Public Utility District crisis program (H20), and other temporary energy programs, as funding is available, are designed to assist Low-Income households in offsetting the cost of heating their homes or avoiding services disconnection. Rate reduction may also be available for qualifying households.

Eligibility Criteria: Each program has particular qualifications. Priority given to elderly and the disabled.

Target Population: Low-Income residents, seniors, and the disabled in El Dorado County.

Linkages Program

Linkages is a unique case management program for adults 18 years and older with disabilities that promotes independence through arranging and coordinating services that help individuals remain safely at home.

Eligibility Criteria: At least age 18; resident of El Dorado County; at risk of institutionalization; in need of support in managing care and obtaining services.

Target Population: Adults requiring assistance due to illness, injury, or disability.


Multipurpose Senior Services Program (MSSP)

MSSP provides comprehensive case management to assist frail elderly persons to remain at home. The goal is to arrange for and monitor the use of community services to prevent or delay premature institutional placement.

Eligibility Criteria: Age 65 or over; receiving Medi-Cal; El Dorado County Resident; at risk of being placed in a skilled nursing facility; need for and willingness to accept MSSP services.

Target Population: Low-Income Elderly.

Special Needs Transportation

Offers a discount on the fixed route in South Lake Tahoe, El Dorado County, and access for the handi-van paratransit at a discount both within the city limits of South Lake Tahoe and the outlying areas of El Dorado County from Camp Richardson to the base of Echo Summit.

Eligibility Criteria: Must be El Dorado County resident, age 60 or older, and meet income guidelines or El Dorado County resident, disabled.

Target Population: Low-Income seniors and the disabled.

Weatherization

Federally funded program offering installation of energy saving devices such as low flow shower heads/faucets, weather stripping, caulking, storm windows, and ceiling fans. Services are free to eligible households. Small appliances may also be available as well as furnace replacement or repair when funding allows.

Eligibility Criteria: Applicants must be El Dorado County residents and meet current program income guidelines.

Target Population: Low-Income residents of El Dorado County. Priority is given to seniors and the disabled.

Family Self-Sufficiency is a program whereby housing participants commit to self-sufficiency in a five-year time span. National Alliance for Mentally Ill - South Lake Tahoe

NAMI is a non-profit organization that offers free support to persons who have loved ones with a mental illness. NAMI supports those with MI to be sure they receive services they need. They teach family groups to help members understand the illness and how to cope with the loved one who is having the problem. NAMI raises funds and fights stigma. Advocates for those who have a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Pregnancy Assistance Center of Tahoe

Assists Women/Teens in crisis pregnancies, as well as assist their partners/parents, by providing a 24-hour help line, free pregnancy tests, information on pregnancy and options, referrals to resources and agencies for additional help, emotional support, and post-abortion counseling.
